The International Symposium on Symbolic and Algebraic Computation

ISSAC is an annual international symposium that provides an opportunity to learn of new developments and to present original research in all areas of symbolic and algebraic computation. The conference topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Algorithmic mathematics:  Algebraic, symbolic, and symbolic-numeric algorithms including:  simplification, polynomial and rational function manipulations, algebraic equations, summation and recurrence equations, integration and differential equations, linear algebra, number theory, group computations, and geometric computing.
  • Computer science:  Theoretical and practical problems in symbolic mathematical manipulation including: computer algebra systems, data structures, computational complexity, problem solving environments, programming languages and libraries for symbolic-numeric-geometric computation, user interfaces, visualization, software architectures, parallel or distributed computing, mapping algorithms to architectures, analysis and benchmarking, automatic differentiation and code generation, automatic theorem proving, mathematical data exchange protocols.
  • Applications: Problem treatments incorporating algebraic, symbolic, symbolic-numeric and geometric computation in an essential or novel way, including engineering, economics and finance, architecture, physical and biological sciences, computer sciences, logic, mathematics, statistics, and uses in education.

Recent and Upcoming Meetings

  • ISSAC 2001, July 22-25, 2001, London, Ontario, Canada.
  • ISSAC 2000, August 7-9, 2000, St. Andrews, Scotland.
  • ISSAC 99, July 29-31, 1999, Vancouver, Canada.
  • ISSAC 98, August 13-15, 1998, Rostock, Germany.

  • ISSAC 95 July 10-12 1995, Montréal, Canada.

Meeting Format

Symposium activities normally include invited presentations, original research papers, tutorial courses, vendor exhibits and software demonstrations. Proceedings are distributed at the symposium.

Proposals for workshops, tutorial courses, demonstrations, panel discussions or related activities are welcomed. User-groups, editorial boards or other associations desiring meeting space during the course of the symposium are encouraged to contact the conference organizers.

The ISSAC conference series dates back to 1966, with ISSAC 2000 being the 25th meeting.

The name ``ISSAC'' was first used for the 1988 meeting, when the European EUROSAM/ EUROCAL/ EUROCAM conferences were merged with the North American SYMSAM/ SYMSAC stream.

While some of the meetings in this series have only sought national-level sponsorship, the majority have been sponsored by ACM SIGSAM. ISSAC has also benefitted from the support of many other organizations.

At the Montreal meeting, the ISSAC community voted to adopt a set of bylaws which state how these meetings shall be run by the ISSAC Steering Committee.
