Rostock University

one of the oldest in Germany

The "alma mater rostochiensis" was already founded in 1419 as the first in the Baltic region. There were only three faculties at first, the faculties of philosophy, law and medicine. Some years later a theological faculty was added.
The university grew in pace with the town and the town grew in pace with its university. In its history it played an important role in disseminating West European culture in the Baltic region. The university survived the difficulties resulting from the Thirty Years War and the dissolution of the Hanse, but also the widespread closure of universities in Germany at the turn of the 18th/ 19th Centuries.
Today approximately 9.000 students study at the oldest university of Northern Europe, more than 300 professors and university teachers are active in teaching and research.
There are 8 faculties with over 30 departments, institutes and independent institutes as well as clinics and outpatient departments: The range of subjects available at Rostock is larger than at most German universities. Thanks to this, opportunities for interdisciplinary research are particularly good at Rostock.
The Rostock University offers a wide number of courses of study (about 40) and post-graduate courses. This diversity is a result of more than 575 years of university development and a few relatively recent changes. The first technical faculty at a classical German university was established in Rostock as recently as 1951.
The new democratic beginning in 1989 was accompanied by the establishment of new faculties and institutes, including the faculties of law and engineering sciences. Some other existing education institutions were incorporated into the university.
The motto over the portal of the main building "DOCTRINE MULTIPLEX VERITAS UNA" (There are many doctrines, but only one truth) has survived the eventful history of the university and still is an obligation for all who teach and learn here.
